Tim Honaker joined UChicagoTech as Chief Operating Officer in September 2003. His responsibilities include managing all aspects of the office’s financial, technology and administrative support infrastructure. He makes sure this operational infrastructure cost-effectively facilitates technology commercialization activities while providing outstanding service to office stakeholders, including investigators, licensees, investors, university administrators, alumni, and professional advisors.
In addition to providing operational support to technology licensing activities, Tim also works closely with the university’s central administration and academic divisions to ensure seamless integration between UChicagoTech’s operations and the University. He also works with other university commercialization offices and industry associations to ensure operations are benchmarked against, and perform at the highest levels of, technology commercialization best practices.
Prior to joining the University, Tim spent most of his career with for-profit businesses, where he focused on using information technology to streamline business processes. Most recently, he was the Vice-President and General Manager of a 1997 start-up division for Menasha Corporation, a $1 billion global manufacturing and services company. That start-up revolutionized the use of reverse logistics technologies and processes as supply chain productivity tools. Having grown to a $60 million third-party logistics business today, the business now operates as National Consolidation Services.
Earlier in his career, Tim was Senior Vice-President of Operations for a management team that purchased and took private a U.S.-based financial publishing and training subsidiary of Pearson, Inc, a $5 billion global media company. After substantially improving the business’s operational performance over the next few years, the business was sold to the Washington Post for a 30-fold return to the original investors.
Beyond these ventures, Tim spent several years working for global law firms. He was the Controller of Mayer Brown, a 1,500+ lawyer law firm. There he helped implement some of the first attorney productivity, practice management and billing rate yield reporting tools in the industry. In addition, he was the Director of Process Improvement for Kirkland and Ellis, a 1,000+ lawyer law firm where he implemented and managed the Project Management Office.
Tim received his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and MBA in Finance from Indiana University and is a Registered Certified Public Accountant in the State of Illinois. He has been an active member of the Association of University Technology Managers, Counsel of Logistics Management, American Association of Publishers, Direct Marketing Association, and Illinois CPA Society.
