Mich Hein, Ph.D.
Executive-in-Residence
Mich Hein is an Executive-in-Residence at the University of Chicago’s Office of Technology and Intellectual Property. In this role, Hein assists the Office in evaluating and commercializing technology developed at the University.
Mich brings a wealth of experience in business development and start-up work to UChicagoTech. He is founder and CEO of Heliose, Inc., a biotechnology company developing products generated from agricultural and renewable byproduct streams. Previously, he served as Chief of Staff for the Illinois Medical District, also managing the Chicago Technology Park and its incubator for start-up life science companies. Mich has also served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Chromatin, Inc (Chicago, Illinois), and was President and Founder of Epicyte Pharmaceutical (La Jolla, California).
Mich’s career includes several years of experience in Research and Development. He spent eight years as a Research Chemist at Monsanto and PPG Industries. Mich also spent ten years as a faculty member at The Scripps Research Institute in the Departments of Molecular Biology and Cell Biology, and concurrently as a professor in Scripps' Graduate Programs in Cellular and Molecular Chemistry and Biology. At Scripps, his research activities focused on plant biotechnology, mucosal immunology, and the use of plant-derived and recombinant proteins to modulate the immune system.
Mich received his B.S. degree from the Honors Tutorial College of Ohio University, and both his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Plant Physiology from the University of Minnesota. He is currently a Limited Partner in and advisor to Convergent Ventures in Los Angeles, California.
